King of Akron or New York?

lebronfornyc.pngNew York fans are desperate and sick of loosing. This is their seventh straight loosing season with a 10-51 record. They are looking for help and they realized it won’t come from Isiah or anyone form the Knicks organization.

“So as New Yorkers we have to put matters in our own hands. ” the website, nycforlebron says.

The website was created by Knicks fans who believe they have the “ability to bring about real change”

They are collecting money and selling merchandise to raise funds to buy Lebron “a New York gift basket (his own suite at Yankee Stadium, additional salary, Gloria James courtside seats, Ferrari, etc.) if he opts out of his contract in July 1, 2010 and comes to New York.”

If you are in Cleveland or just an NBA fan, then you are aware of the media and their love for Lebron to leave Cleveland for a bigger market where he would be more marketable.

In many interviews, Lebron mentioned his love for playing close to his home town and having his mother, girlfriend, kids, and school friends watch him play at the Q.

Chris Broussard of ESPN Magazine, said in an interview On First Take, “despite all the speculation that fans and the media want to make, he has talked to Lebron AND many people very close to Lebron, and the honest sentiment is that Lebron wants to (and is intending to) stay in Cleveland.”He also said “that Lebron has told him how he saw that the greats often set their legacy with one team (Michael, Magic, Hakeem, others) and that if the Cavaliers continue to treat him well and build around him like they have, he fully intends to continue playing here.”

“I am comfortable where I am and my family is a big part of what I do every day and being home is meaningful to me,” James said after his 50-point performance at Madison Square Garden. ”I’m happy where I am and we have a good chance to win a championship. I’m fine (playing in a small market), I perform when I get on those stages, whether I am in New York or L.A. or Chicago.”

This is all bad news for New York but you never know what might happen in two years.

Fred McLeod with a Mohawk?

Are Mohawk’s a fashion statement, someone screaming for attention or simply a way to say I am different.  Well apparently Damon Jones got his because he wanted to stick out from the crowd.
Damon Jones is never embarrassed.   The Cleveland Cavalier got his mohawk in January to stick out from the crowd.
“I get a lot of attention from it,” he said. “I never envisioned that it would be this big — I’m impressed that a lot of kids are now adopting the mohawk.
“My teammates have been on my behind to cut it off,” Jones said. “I think some of the guys are just envious; you have to be handsome to pull off a mohawk.”  Of course Damon has shaved it off.  Even Cleveland Cavaliers announcer Fred McLeod has accepted a dare by team owner Dan Gilbert to get a mohawk if the Cavs win it all this year.  Now that is something I would like to see.  Fred McLeod with a mohawk?  Yikes!

Ben Wallace Ailing

Ben Wallace will more than likely sit out of Wednesday’s game against the New Orleans Hornets due to ongoing back spasms over the last couple of weeks. With the playoffs arriving in full force soon the Cavaliers want to make sure they have Wallace healthy and ready to play.

“We just have to make sure going down the stretch that he gets enough rest with that back so that you can limit the effects going into the playoffs,” coach Mike Brown said following Tuesday’s practice.

Vogue Cover Starring LeBron and Gisele Called Racially Insensitive

The image of Lebron James with Gisele Bundchen is stirring up controversy with some calling the “photo as perpetuating racial stereotypes. James strikes what some see as a gorilla-like pose, baring his teeth, with one hand dribbling a ball and the other around Bundchen’s tiny waist.”

Magazine analyst, Samir Husni believes the photo was deliberately provocative, adding that it “screams King Kong.” Considering Vogue’s influential history, he said, covers are not something that the magazine does in a rush.”So when you have a cover that reminds people of King Kong and brings those stereotypes to the front, black man wanting white woman, it’s not innocent,” he said.

James told The Cleveland Plain Dealer he was pleased with the cover, saying he was “just showing a little emotion.”

“Everything my name is on is going to be criticized in a good way or bad way,” James told the paper. “Who cares what anyone says?”

One reader of the magazine commented in USA Today saying:

“This cover is very hurtful to the white basketball players. It screams that only blacks can play basketball, be successful and that white women would choose a black man over successful white man. I am boycotting Vogue from now on.”

Another reader said:

“He’s a basketball player who is known for his abilities…what kind of face should he be making? He is in his element, whether black, white, or purple, he IS a basketball player. It’s not like they took just some tall black guy and made him wear a basketball uniform and have a blonde jumping up and down for him. Sheesh. People need to seriously get over themselves and stop taking things so seriously.”

Mat Carter of Canada.com said, “Perhaps it’s because we in Canada carry slightly less racial baggage then our southern friends, but to me the criticism is a mite hysterical — not to mention insulting toward James.”

13 Year Old Robbed of Lebron James Nike Shoes

Just 10 miles south of Cleveland, a 13-year-old Cleveland boy was robbed of his shoes and cash while waiting for the RTA bus at the Day Drive RTA stop behind Parmatown Mall.

Tyler and a friend were waiting for the bus when one suspect approached Tyler and asked for change to ride the bus.

Tyler said yes, then the suspect took the $200 Tyler had in his wallet and the LeBron shoes that cost him $130.

“They just said, ‘do you have change?’ I said yeah, so they grabbed my money and took all my stuff,” Tyler said.

The suspects were described as white males 15 or 16 years old with medium build.

Joe Tait to be Honored

joe-tait.jpgJoe Tait will be calling his 3,000th game on Wednesday.   Joe will be honored at halftime of the game against the New Orleans Hornets.  Joe is 70 years old and doesn’t appear to be slowing down.  Other than offering his “opinion” from time to time Joe has remained one of the best in the game for 35 years.
There is also a great clip of Joe Tait announcing a classic Cavaliers Vs. Bullets game at the Miracle of Richfield.  Click Here to see the clip.

Mr. In-Between

As a first name. “Devin” is unusual, although not rare. Kind of in-between. “Brown” is cliché-common; put it after Devin, though, and it no longer sounds so ordinary. Rather in-between.

Undrafted out of the University of Texas-San Antonio (UTSA) in 2002, Devin Brown split the 2002-2003 season between the NBA (10 games with San Antonio and Denver) and the NBA D League. A pattern emerges.

Arriving in Cleveland by way of San Antonio, Denver, Utah, the Golden State and New Orleans, Joe Gabriele struggled to define Devin’s skill sets:

The Cavaliers’ second unit has its pretty boy shooters like Boobie Gibson, Damon Jones and Wally Szczerbiak. And its got a lunchpail crew who can get down and dirty, with guys like Anderson Varejao, Joe Smith and Dwayne Jones.

And then there’s Devin Brown – somewhere in-between. (Source: Cavs.com)

Devin first played professional basketball for the Kansas Cagerz in 2002. During his rookie year he averaged 17.3 points, 6.2 rebounds and was honored with the United States Basketball League (USBL) Rookie of the Year award. He was, of course, between his amateur high school/college life and his soon-to-be NBA career.
