James, Jay Z on Stage for Obama

Cavaliers’ star Lebron James and Jay Z shared the stage together at the Q in a rally to support the Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama.

“Nov. 4 is the most important day of our lives,” James said. “Everybody in here, get your family out there and vote. You know who I’m voting for, I’m voting for Obama.”

All 20,500-seat were sold and the crowed errupted with cheers and whistles when Obama’s image flashed on three screens at the start of his nationally televised commercial at 8 p.m.

Gooden Mystical Beard

The past two seasons, Gooden has been showing fans his “artisitc” side. Two years ago, he grew a ducktail. Then last year, there was this beard contest between him and DeShawn Stevenson to see which one could go the longest without cutting it.

Now come the new beard. I don’t know how to explain it so I will let Drew give you an idea:

“Sometimes you’ve got to sacrifice your good looks.”

“As beards go, it has to rank among the best we’ve ever had around here.”

“Honestly, it is up there with Honest Abe Lincoln’s … and Papa Hemingway’s white one … or Rick Sutcliffe’s red scrub brush … or Matt Clement’s billy-goat goatee … or Bobby Jenks’ blond chin strip … or Kyle Orton at his grizzliest. It is a wizard’s whiskers, mystical and fanciful and (best of all, if ever a wiz there was) three-pointed.”

Celtics top Cavaliers in season opener

Paul Pierce scored 27 points to lead the defending champion Boston Celtics to a 90-85 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers in the opening game of the National Basketball Association’s regular season.

LeBron James and the Cavaliers led the Celtics by as many as 11 points in the first half and held a 50-43 halftime advantage at TD Banknorth Garden in Boston last night. The Celtics recovered in the third quarter, outscoring Cleveland 24- 13 to take a 67-63 lead. Pierce, the Most Valuable Player in last year’s NBA Finals, scored 11 points during the quarter.

James had 22 points to lead Cleveland, though he missed a layup with 41 seconds left that would have pulled the Cavaliers within 86-85. He also missed two of four free throw attempts in the final 10 seconds.

The Celtics opened their 2008 season last night with a loud and loving celebration of basketball in Boston, a blowout that surely defined the term “hoopla.”

First half: 53 percent shooting, 11 assists, 22 trips to the foul line. Second half: 39 percent shooting, five assists, 11 trips to line. That sums it up right there. A major factor was the Celtics’ defense, they are physical and they set the tone right off the bat in the second half. The Cavs’ reaction was to look at the officials and hope for fouls and then stop moving all together. There was a lot more 1-on-1 play in the second half, which plays into the Celtics’ strength. It is just the first game, but this was a regression back to last season.

Cavaliers scream team dancer injured during preseason game

Last night during a preseason game against the Washington Wizards, one of the scream team members landed on the side of his face while attempting a stunt.

He was taken off the court on a stretcher. He reported movement in all his extremities before leaving the arena.

The game was held up for more than 10 minutes as medical personnel attended to him.

Following the injury, members of both teams gathered near the scorers table and bowed their heads. The crowd was silent.

Lebron James Scores 26 points in final pre season game

The Cavaliers played their best preseason game and had their highest scoring total. Lebron James had a preseason high 26 points, five rebounds and six assists. Mo Williams added 15 points but only one assist in their win (107-80) against the Washington Wizards. The Cavaliers committed only nine turnovers.

“We talked about taking care of the basketball and not having turnovers,” Cleveland coach Mike Brown said. “I asked the guys if they could keep it below 13 turnovers, and our guys did a heck of a job.”

The game was held at Ohio State’s Value City Arena. James gave a nod to the Ohio State program by wearing a white Buckeyes T-shirt underneath his warmup shirt.

“It means a lot,” Lebron said of playing in Columbus on the court where he earned three prep state championships. “Me being here in high school, playing here in March. I’m in love with Ohio State, everything that goes on with the campus, the sporting events, everything. To be able to bring my team here professionally was fun.”

Lebron didn’t fly back with the team. Instead, he will be at the the big OSU-Penn State game today.

“I think there’s a lot of sports teams in Ohio, period, that don’t get the recognition or the praise that we should get,” said James. “That’s not a concern for us. We just go out – Cavs, Browns, Indians, Buckeyes – and just try to do what we do. We just try to win ballgames.”
